چکیده

This article presents the first version of a talking head, called MOTHER (MOrphable Talking Head for Enhanced Reality), based on an articulatory model describing the degrees-offreedom of visible (lips, cheeks...) but also partially or indirectly visible (jaw, tongue...) speech articulators. Skin details are rendered using texture mapping/blending techniques. We illustrate here the flexibility of such an articulatory control of video-realistic speaking faces by first demonstrating its ability in tracking facial movements by an optical-to-articulatory inversion using an analysis-by-synthesis technique. The stability and reliability of the results allow the automatic inversion of large video sequences. Inversion results are here used to build automatically a coarticulation model for the generation of facial movements from text. It improves the previous Text-ToAudioVisual-Speech (TTAVS) synthesizer developed at the ICP both in terms of the accuracy and realism.

Image-based Talking Heads using Radial Basis Functions

In recent years talking heads have received a great deal of interest, both in their application to natural humancomputer dialogue, and their benefit to the intelligibility of synthesised speech. A model for the realistic synthesis of visual speech animation is described in this paper. Images representing the key visual speech poses (visemes) are pre-recorded and labelled. Transitions between vi...

Virtual Talking Heads and audiovisual articulatory synthesis

Our approach to audiovisual articulatory synthesis involves the development of Virtual Talking Heads that integrate the articulatory, aerodynamic and acoustic phenomena underlying speech production. Specifically, these Talking Heads are faithful clones of the speakers whose data the various models are based on. Our contribution presents some of the results achieved at ICP in this domain: 3D oro...

The Development of a Brazilian Talking Head

This paper describes partial results of a research, in progress at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the State University of Campinas, aimed at developing a realistic three-dimensional Brazilian Talking Head. Through an extensive analysis of a video-audio linguistic corpus, a set of 29 phonetic context-dependent visemes (22 consonantal plus 7 vocalic visemes), that accommodat...

Transforming an embodied conversational agent into an efficient talking head: from keyframe-based animation to multimodal concatenation synthesis

BACKGROUND Virtual humans have become part of our everyday life (movies, internet, and computer games). Even though they are becoming more and more realistic, their speech capabilities are, most of the time, limited and not coherent and/or not synchronous with the corresponding acoustic signal. METHODS We describe a method to convert a virtual human avatar (animated through key frames and int...

Creating and controlling video-realistic talking heads

We present a linear three-dimensional modeling paradigm for lips and face, that captures the audiovisual speech activity of a given speaker by only six parameters. Our articulatory models are constructed from real data (front and profile images), using a linear component analysis of about 200 3D coordinates of fleshpoints on the subject's face and lips. Compared to a raw component analysis, our...
